About Ms. Haygen

Ever since I can remember, I have always wanted to be a teacher.  I remember "playing school" on Saturday mornings in my grandparents' basement.  It was always a challenge to convince my sisters to join in on my fun; however, I often succeeded in recruiting my younger sister.  I can still hear my grandma say, "Duddy, you're going to make a great teacher some day."  The desire to teach children has never left me.  In fact, it has become who I am today - a lifelong learner with a passion to each teach children and inspire children to follow their dreams.

For the past 11 years, I have been teaching for Dearborn Public Schools, primarily at Miller Elementary School.  I feel very fortunate to have been given this opportunity, as it has allowed me to grow and develop as an educator.  Communicating effectively with both English and non-English speaking students and parents has given me the desire to continue working with bilingual students.  With the support and encouragement of staff members, I have learned to more readily identify and meet the needs of individual students.  Long-term assignments have enabled me to plan and prepare lessons and enhance my classroom management skills.  Patience and flexibility have become key elements.  As a teacher, I continue to learn from my students, as they learn from me. Helping students understand the value of learning and motivating students to do their best is the noblest career path I can imagine.

In the Spring of 2008, I was awarded the Center for the Education of Women Scholarship, giving me the chance to continue working towards my Master of Arts in Education with elementary certification at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.  Twenty years after graduating from the University of Michigan-Dearborn with a Bachelor of Arts degree, I am back and excited as ever!

Thank you students, parents, Dearborn Pubic Schools, and the University of Michigan-Dearborn for making my little girl dreams come true.
